SEMHA Concussion Awareness Seminar – Open to all!

This is NOT simply a “Hockey Discussion”…it is about understanding adolescent concussions and managing return-to-play

SouthEnd Minor Hockey (SEMHA), with the support of the Royal Bank of Canada, is proud to host an open forum for parents, coaches, trainers and others throughout the community to hear from leading experts on adolescent concussions and what parents need to know about return-to-play.

This is your chance to seek answers from a team of Doctors who are actively working together in our community co-managing patient athletes who have sustained brain trauma.

Dr. Kristian Goulet -  Originally from Ottawa and now practicing in Ottawa, Dr.Goulet completed his Pediatric Residency training at the University of New Mexico and then went on to do a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Harvard University. He has trained under some of the great leaders in the concussion field at the Concussion Clinic at Harvard University Children’s Hospital in Boston; a center nationally recognized for innovative concussion treatments. He has also designed a concussion education program and is the Clinical Supervisor for the Concussion Education Program for the Sports Legacy Institute. He has presented at national conferences and became a certified neuropsychologic testing analyst.   Dr. Goulet is a member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, American College of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, and the Canadian Pediatric Society.

Dr. Bill Clarke – Dr. Clarke is from Tillsonburg, Ontario. He has resided in Ottawa since 1992, after graduating from the University Of Waterloo School Of Optometry.   Dr. Clarke provides primary eye care, and specializes in Sports Vision screening, training and treatment of both amateur and professional athletes in the Ottawa area (Ottawa Senators, Ottawa 67s, Ottawa Jr A Sens , Ottawa Rough Riders and Renegades, Olympic athletes). He has certification in neuro-optometric assessment and rehabilitation of individuals whom suffer a traumatic brain injury (concussion) and /or a cerebral vascular accident (stroke). Dr. Clarke has lectured at the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry and the University of Ottawa. He also presents extensively to service clubs, students and social clubs for children (Sparks, Brownies, Girl Guides) on the benefits of maintaining eye health, sports vision, and concussion prevention –assessment and treatment. Dr. Clarke is also a SEHMA coach and trainer.

Dr. Robert Laquerre – Dr. Robert Laquerre is an Ottawa based Chiropractor, Certified A.R.T. (Active Release Techniques) provider and Graston Techniques provider.  He has extensive training and experience in the treatment of muscoskeletal and soft tissue injuries related to sports injuries and repetitive strain injuries.  His experience with athletes both professional and amateur is vast and includes professional athletes from the NHL, CFL including the Ottawa Redblacks, European Hockey League, CJMHL, Canadian Gymnastics Team, CPGA, as well as amateur athletes from Ottawa based sports teams and organizations. Outside of his practice he has lectured extensively on workplace wellness program for many private and public organizations, has participated as an expert with Ottawa based radio stations and newspapers, has been a presenter at the Academy of Medicine in Ottawa, and is a preferred health expert with Greco’s SNI Network. Dr. Laquerre is also a SEMHA coach and trainer.
 
 Chuck Dufton - Throughout Chuck Dufton’s tenure with Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO), he has been involved in all aspects of training. He was HEO’s Master Course Conductor for their training program and was an instrumental part of HEO/HEO Minor mandating a trainer on the bench for all levels of hockey in the branch.  Hockey Canada has utilized him as a member at large on its National Trainers Committee and has called upon him as a subject matter expert for various symposiums (concussions & trainers) across our Country. He is also the Chairman of the Trainers Committee for the HDCO.  Chuck’s dedication to the sport, the training program and Risk and Safety education continues to influence all trainers in our branch.  Given the wealth of experience he possesses, Chuck was the trainer/equipment manager for Team Canada at the 1st Pan American Ice Hockey Tournament in Mexico City.
